Community Impact- You Matter

Mobilizing members of a community to create lasting changes in the conditions of that community is a primary goal of the Plymouth United Way. This is accomplished through the unification and management of all of the community’s resources. Personal donations of time, talent and money are crucial to improve and maintain conditions in any community.
Impact programs bring together the resources of churches, commercial entities, and individuals to provide support and relief services for the most vulnerable members of our community.
Programs that nurture children and youth are the direct result of your donations. The Plymouth Community United Way, in partnership with Visteon provided funding to establish schoolyard wildlife habitats in the Plymouth-Canton School District in 2004/2005. Special projects also included the Kindergarten Readiness Program, a new mini bus for the YMCA, and Children’s Camp funds.
Senior citizens and those with disabilities are beneficiaries of the Community Impact Program. The Plymouth Community United Way provides assistance with wheelchairs, ramps, and transportation for the elderly and disabled. The Christmas In Action program resulted in funding to complete housing repairs for low-income families.
The Human Services Collaborative marshals the resources of churches, businesses, and other groups to offer a support network to provide emergency services for those who require them, including direct intervention and referrals to address specific needs. Public, private, and non-profit sectors join to develop a crisis response system for the community.
Community Impact is about improving the lives of people affected by pressing issues by mobilizing the resources of the entire community for the benefit of those in need.

A Message from Marie Morrow, President:
Vision is Becoming Reality

The Plymouth Community United Way (PCUW) established a Long-Term Investment (LTI) fund in 2002. The initial contribution was $75K, which was from the net proceeds of the annual Kick-off Classic Golf outing. The vision for the LTI was to create a fund that after many years of contributions would generate a sufficient dividend to cover the regular operating expense of the PCUW. This achievement of offsetting the operating expense would then enable all of the gross campaign contributions to be fully allocated to our local charities.
Over the past 5 years, the PCUW team, its Board and especially our lead corporate sponsors have remained fully committed to the Annual Kick-off Classic. The results have been outstanding, as each year the fund has grown from the contribution and from reinvested interest. In 2006, the proceeds contributed were $162K, bringing the present value of the LTI to $813K!
Setting the vision, following through on the execution and staying committed to the plan over the long term is a great recipe for success!

Forecast is for Solid United Way Campaign

The Plymouth Community United Way announced that WDIV-TV weather forecaster Chuck Gaidica will lead this year's fund-raising effort as the PCUW's 2007 campaign chairman.
Gaidica spoke to volunteers during the PCUW's annual meeting at Johnson Controls in Plymouth Township, shortly after it was announced the 2006 campaign surpassed its $1.3 million goal.
"I'm proud to take my name and my face and my image, and all the good things that Channel 4 has built over time, and leverage them for us to try and bring some awareness to this great cause," Gaidica said. "Looking at last year's budget projections and the goals that were set, and the great achievement of raising $1.3 million-plus, it's apparent to me this exemplary effort has become somewhat routine."
The 2006 PCUW campaign raised $20,000 more than budgeted, making it the 23rd consecutive year the goal has been met or exceeded.
Gaidica said part of his decision to chair the 2007 campaign came after looking at the PCUW numbers, including administrative costs, which are only 7 percent of the budget.
"I'm happy to be involved in the United Way because this particular organization does a great job in fund-raising ... but also has a great track record of keeping expenses down," Gaidica said. "It's good we keep the costs and expenses down, so the money that we're asking people to donate is actually going to the bottom line."
PCUW board chairman Greg Foster said with the challenging Michigan economy, the demands for people who need help are growing.
"Job cutbacks and layoffs have impacted many of our friends and family members, and the result is local service needs are increasing, be they for basic human services, for support for mental problems, or for various types of abuse like drug, alcohol or spousal," Foster said. "I encourage each of you to help spread the word about the importance of supporting the local needy through the Plymouth Community United Way."
Besides fundraising to meet our financial goals, the PCUW participated in a number of other activities that show our commitment to the Plymouth-Canton communities.
This year’s golf outing in August, sponsored by DTE Energy, raised $162,792. All the proceeds will go toward the long-term investment fund, which eventually will pay for all expenses associated with operating the PCUW. Reaching that goal will create a Plymouth Community United Way in which 100 percent of every dollar you give will go directly to meet the social service needs of the community.
In October, the PCUW sponsored Make-A-Difference Day activities. Nearly 200 volunteers helped with outdoor clean-up and fix-up projects for seniors and disadvantaged residents.
The annual Golf Free for a Turkey event at Fox Hills Golf & Banquet Center. More than 100 turkeys were collected and distributed to needy families with the help of United Parcel Service.
Among the other grants given this year by the PCUW included $2,700 to the Salvation Army’s children’s camp; $15,169 for senior transportation and holiday meals; $6,850 for the Human Service Collaborative emergency fund; and $5,000 to Christmas in Action for home repairs to help low income seniors.
Thanks to our Key Contributors, who this year worked especially hard to help us reach our goals in this tough economic climate. Receiving a Platinum Award was Johnson Controls. Gold contributors included Automotive Components Holdings (ACH), DTE Energy, General Motors, Metaldyne, UAW Local 845, Unisys, United Parcel Service and Visteon Corporation. Silver contributors included AT&T, Community Financial and Federal Mogul Technical Center.
